What is it about this mechanic that attracts to many drooling retards?

You don't see Z-Move or Dynamax fans be nearly as obnoxious. What went so horribly wrong for people to get so worked up over a gimmick that was never meant to last outside of Kalos to begin with?

If they'd just been form changes like everything else had been, it wouldn't have been a problem. But the instant they became a 4th tier "evolution", they attracted the digifags who thought Pokémon was going full retard (that's why they keep thinking they're coming back o the core games).

Because Megas are essentially new pokemon, like regional forms. Of course people don't want them cut forever. Z-moves and dynamax are a load of nothing by comparison.

But it did last outside of Kalos. They stopped making new ones, but the existing ones continue to make appearances in spinoffs, anime, and merchandise. Mega Evolution has not stopped existing or being acknowledged.

Well, duh. They like money and selling megamerch is better than missing out on earning money for it. But the main games have moved on from them, so they're functionally dead, at least to Game Freak who've been replacing the Gen's in-battle, bangle-powered nuke button with different things since Gen 7, with another new gimmick coming along this year (likely tied tot he new forms of the box legends, if scuttlebutt's to be believed).
'Course, given what they were, it's not hard to see why they got killed. They're essentially slaps in the face of the designers who'd created the initial lines, by inferring they were somehow incomplete and needed a final stage design to finish them (probably why Sugimori couldn't make M-Flygon, he likely thought it WAS perfect as-is and couldn't think of a way it could be "improved").

They were intending to cut the 'dex in Gen 7 anon. That inferred EVERYTHING that didn't make SM's regional 'Dex was yeeted. But they changed their minds on that, assuming you retards would cry they were able to fit everything into XY/ORAS so why not now (and given how #BBND ultimately turned out, they were spot-on).
When they decided to add everything back in, they decided they had to add megas. They also put it at the post-game, where they knew 95% of players wouldn't even see it (as only about 10% of people who buy a video game, complete that video game) and it would have no bearing on the new story they wanted to tell.
It's fine to like megas, to call them anything other than a gimmick along with Z-Moves and Dynamax/Gigantamax is ignoring the actual presentation of them in the games, anime and other related aspects.
