Although technically you had to physically run away from a battle to escape. That's something for gameplay, but it's not really much of a deal. Being able to control the perspective was the important part. Made things feel a bit more dynamic.

PLA battle system was fun but far from being remotely competitive. Speed priority is whack and gives too much advantage, and damage calculation makes so little sense. Things that should be hitting for 1 or 2 damage are taking out a quarter or more of my HP.

I would prefer a more hybrid system, free usage when choosing shit and not just constantly in motion. But the actual animations the camera becomes focused.
I'm just tired of the constantly moving camera.

The games were likely developed simultaneously and very little if any communication occurred between both teams.

A big part of that was the nearly nonexistent level scaling.

Pokemon get very, very few stats from level up, but get a ton for just existing as a pokemon of a given species. A level 60 fighting a level 30 is more like a level 60 fighting a level 50 in PLA.

Except for speed, where even a few points of difference change everything, and let a pokemon bite three times in a row.
