I do think the pattern didn't start with gen 1 or 2, The earliest point it was probably intended was 3, but even then that could have been a pure coincidence.
But 8 generations of coincidence when we could have had, a fire bear, a fire elemental type thing, fire bug, fire elephant, fire giraffe, fire flamingo, fire trex, or even a repeat of the starters.
I think it's to much of a coincidence.
