Was the gen 3 "dexcut" really seen as a big deal at the time? I don't remember anyone complaining about it back in the day.

It literally ended pokemania because people couldn't bring their teams forward.
So there was no incentive for people to continue with the fad.

It wouldn't be until highschool (and DP) that people came back. The big return though was HGSS, fueled by nostalgia and the large amount of features they added.

How many people even transfer their pokemon to begin with? Most players just restart a file when they're done and don't think to preserve anything.

I was pretty bummed that I couldn't transfer up my old Pokemon from Silver, but it was exciting getting the otherwise unobtainable Johto Pokemon from Colosseum and FRLG

Gen 3 carts had extra unused space, and converting a gen 2 Pokemons data structure to gen 3 could have been done easily, as shown by the Pokemon home support for gbc vc, or the guy on YouTube who recently made a trade converter device diy

This was the same gen where Pokemon was one of the few games to use the GBA-Gamecube cable, Pokemon was the only reason most people ever bought an e-reader, and FRLG came with (and was afaik the only game to use) the wireless link adapter, but you think a GBC to GBA cable adapter would have been beyond the limits of technology? The problem was with the games not being built to recognize each other, the different hardware would have been a trivial fix if the software side was taken care of

It's understandable honestly, that they didn't go out of their way to ask Nintendo to do an adaptator, and then having to make it sell

Gen 3 didn't even have a dexcut though. All the pokemon created up to then were still in the game's data and could be traded in from other games. It was just that you couldn't transfer pokemon in from gens 1 and 2.

It was basically the straw that broke the camel's back for the few kids who still cared about the games past Gen 1, made even worse when they basically said "fuck you, buy your bros all over again" with FRLG, Emerald and the Orre games.
Everyone else by Late Pokemania had moved onto Anime+TCG+Merch exclusively and couldn't give a rat's ass about GS due to game costs.

One of the main goals of Pokemon was collecting all Pokemon. Gen 2 featured 250 monsters across Kanto and Johto, which could be played together. But come Gen 3? This is when it started to become increasingly inaccessible to the average player. Loss of connectivity between games meant that you had to start from scratch. There were almost 400, monsters, now split across a bunch of different games including Gamecube RPGs. As well as "Mythical" Pokemon events which were now tied to real life events and movies. Leading to lost locations like Faraway Island or Birth Island which can't be played today without some ancient ticket from the 2000s.

All this plays into why casuals stopped giving a shit for many years.

Yes, a bunch of my friends quit pokemon there and then. People at school had all heard "Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire doesn'tt have all the Pokemon" despite the internet not being really huge yet. I was really, really annoyed as well but I stuck with it.

It's pretty crazy how much shit you needed to buy to get everything in Gen 3. In Gen 2 all you need is one of the Gen 1 games and both Gold/Silver. In Gen 3, you need either all 5 GBA games or Emerald/Leafgreen and the 2 GC games, that's not even mentioning you have to replay some of them multiple times to get everything.

Gen 3 Dexcut was worse if you cared about having all your teammates from the old games archived in a modern game. (You can have all 386 Pokemon species, but you can't have your specific Charizard from RBY.)

Gen 8 Dexcut was worse if you cared about having every species eventually usable in a given modern game. (You can have your specific Charizard from FRLG, but you can't have all 905 Pokemon species outside of Home)

It's that simple. Both were bad for different reasons.

There wasn't, because GF had a good logistical reason for being unable to transfer.

No. The pokemania boom had died and hardly anyone cared about the games at the time. If anyone ever found out you played video games that weren't Sports or GTA in 2002 then you where labeled as a massive faggot. The few who still played pokemon in secret didn't care about the dex cut, they where just happy to have a new pokemon game to play. The Swsh dex cut was only a big deal because carrying all your pokemon over from a previous generations had become the norm. That kind of mindset or expectation wasn't around for gen 3.

Literally the wikipedia article on the game boy link cable mentions an easy way to do it in passing, and third-party cables designed to be used on either handheld via a switch were already on the verge of doing the same thing

It pissed me off personally at the time. I liked RSE but didn't like the soft Dexcut. Not necessarily because I was too attached to a Pokemon or because I had some exclusive Mythical from an in-person event, but because I had a ton of Lugia and Typhlosion clones (using the Gen 2 cloning glitch) that I wish I could've transferred over to Hoenn and use as trade fodder with classmates during breaks. Nowadays I don't care as much, especially since 3DS Virtual Console transfers are now a thing. I'm more worried about Bank right now honestly.

Main pair games for every gen after 2 sold about 16 million and the second games sold about 7 million except obviously XY got fucked out of that, and the remakes sold about 12 million except ORAS which did 14.
There was barely a resurgence of sales following the 20th anniversary.

Earliest that I could remember was late gen 2, even then it seemed like pokemania was fading out a bit even before gen 3 came out. I think pokemon's popularity was pretty tame up unti gen 6 when normalfags started eating the series up again, even before go came out. Not sure if it was because Pokemon was going 3D or the amount of kanto shilling XY had.

Yep this lmao but a lot of people that did play Pokemon that I talked to did understand why it was a thing back in the day too. Sure, people found out that it's POSSIBLE now, but the early 2000s was a vastly different time and we learn about technology more and more as time passes. I still don't know a single liscensed GBA game that can communicate with GB(C) natively.

RS was datamined very quickly and all the sprites and functionality was in there anyway. The boards I frequented saw it as more of an inconvenience but everyone was pretty hopeful they'd be available somehow later on.
It's also important to note that this was also the time when Pokemon's popularity was in a dip. When SWSH came around Pokemon had a much larger audience with the diehards, children whose parents were into the series, and Pogo's fad (re)introduced people into the series.

No because pokemania at large had died off, leaving only the fans who at that point were tired of Kanto and Johto was no longer a novelty. Hoenn was something new, and when it comes to the games I personally feel like the jump from Gameboy color to GBA was big enough for people to understand why stuff couldn't be transferred over.
I don't think it was until gen 4 with pal park that people who still had their old carts began complaining

It was, but: A. Social media didn't exist at the time, so complaints were largely isolated, B. You could still have them all in the game, though it was harder to do and required buying more games, and C. This wasn't known at the time, but transferring up to gen 3 would've required the GBA to be able to talk to a GBC or even an original GB, which Nintendo was not willing to support, so Game Freak had to cut it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I will say I was disappointed but I got over it because at the time I hadn't formed any attachments to any particular mons. Ironically, it was gen 3 where that first happened for me, so when Dexit came around that pissed me off enough to not buy SwSh (still haven't, most likely not going to, or if I do it'll be used).

Yes, the reason why most in this thread is trying to paint it as "not a big deal" or "not bad" likely started with Ruby & Sapphire. The dex cut is bad now but at least you can keep Pokemon you've had in any game since 2003. So your 2003 Blaziken or 2007 Infernape will be here. But not your 1998 Charizard or 2000 Typhlosion because RS cut off trade.

Even if they were somehow able to make GBC games compatible with GBA games, Pokemon from 2000 or 1998 wouldn't have shown up that way anyway. The Gen 4 met date is the date transferred via Pal Park and Gen 5 onwards met date is the date transferred to Gen 5 via PokeTransfer.

In Japan, and I know nothing about Japan so I won't speak on Pokemon's presence there but everywhere else Pokemania died off because everybody got their fill of Johto from GSC, the movies were now in limited theatres starting with Celebi and the anime was in a slump.
The wait between gen 2 and 3 wasn't short enough to keep the fad going. 1-2 at least had tons of hints. If you didn't have the Internet or caught up with magazines you wouldn't even know about gen 3 unless you were lucky enough to catch the Kecleon ep in 2002.

every one of my friends and me disliked it but we were children so just as some here already said. it wasn't a big deal since nobody had a full dex collection or fully EV trained mons waiting in their boxes.
