I wholeheartedly agree. Legends was the most fun pokemon game I've played apart from gen 2. It really recaptured the magic imo

I was thinking of doing a monotype run. Probably not hardcore because I'm rolling a (virtual) dice for the typing and I like my sanity.
HGSS are an objective improvement and were made by a director that actually understood what the games were about, so if I want to play GS I just default to those.
But I still like the Gen 2 aesthetic more, which means the definitive version of the games takes the cake for me.

Typhosion, but Tyranitar and Scizor are tied for a close second. Also honorable mention to Smeargle.

I like how GSC give players so much freedom to do what they want and the weekly events. Also, I like that patch of grass outside of the Ruins of Alph.

depends on if i want the physical/special split or not. usually, i end up playing the vc releases of crystal and silver, but recently HG with the pokewalker has been a blast.

johto has so many of my favorites it's not even funny. xatu, misdreavus, piloswine, porygon2, sunflora, sudowoodo, miltank, ampharos, crobat, the starters. quagsire will forever be my favorite tho.

mon designs and soundtrack. while gen 1 feels very kaiju-y, gen 2 is cute and weird in a way that the rest of the series never comes close to. the music really meshes with the art making this comfy, bizarre game that feels very "lived-in". i love it.

Today I finally finished my pokedex in both HGSS and Platinum, thus gaining the final star of my trainer card. All that's left is to rematch the Elite Four.
Pretty hilarious that Corsola was the last page needed before missing in the gen 3-4 pages by breeding and trading with Plat.

I've got a new appreciation for Donphan since as a Phanphy egg hatched at the very beginning it's pickup ability is extremely useful in the early game. Kingdra and Tyranitar were the mvps of the playthrough.

Playing a Crystal nuzlocke using a limited Dex challenge I made. Just beat Bugsy and this is the team, I cannot evolve my starter with my rule.

Using these lesser used Pokemon like Unown, Qwilfish, and Dunsparce and actually getting use out of them, my Dunsparce solo'd Bugsy easily.

Smeargle, such a cute design and fun gimmick. I could've used it in this challenge but I got Unown as my Ruins of Alph encounter instead since I have no other Psychic option.

The aesthetics and being more shorter of a playthrough. I also like that there isn't as much handholding or shit I could not care less about like the forced tutorials, Pokeathleon etc. HGSS was the beginning where things like that began to get in the way rather than be minor inconveniences.
With Crystal, you can do things at your own pace and are fully in control of your adventure, something I like about the first 4 gens. BTW, play Sour Crystal, has slightly redrawn sprites to be more consistent with Sugimori's art, adds back in the version exclusives/Celebi and uses SM's HM system.

I have a weird attachment to the simpler and shitter mechanics of the older games. That isn't saying later games are inferior, but there's something endearing about having to adapt to the more primitive mechanics like dumb learnsets and the lack of physical/special split.

Hatched a shiny Pichu from the Odd Egg after only 4 hatches. My rules make it so that I can only hatch either shiny Igglybuff or Pichu, so I was really expecting to get the much more common one but I am very happy with this.

Team update after Whitney, a lot of the Pokemon I had available were weak to rock so I ended up losing Lil Thing the Cyndaquil and Garu the Hoothoot, but the team has upgraded a bit after a bunch of happiness grinding. I'm really liking this team.

While HGSS introduced some neat QoL things and expanded few elements, it also added a lot of very annoying padding, railroading and other issues that plague modern Pokemon games. Also progression in Johto was build around gen 2 mechanics and moving it to gen 4 makes it very grating experience. This is from where all the "bad level curve" memes are coming from. Also gen 2 just looks better.

i've always seen gen2 as being about humans and pokémon living side by side in harmony, johto is the japanese countryside, it's chill, most of the pokémon introduced in this generation aren't threatening, they're mostly here to add to the fauna. it's a region were people live at their own pace and don't really care about being behind.
that's my favourite aspect of gen 2.

if you've ever seen japanese movies or animes in a countryside setting, that's how i imagine johto to be like.
there's yokohama kaidashi kikou that really captures that vibe, especially in it's ost

Red with Gen 2 colors and sprites patched in. Keeps the Gen 1 battle system though. It would be nice to one day play a "GSC but in reverse" romhack where you play through Kanto as normal and Johto is the 'boss rush' sector of the game, this is probably as close as it will get.

Team after beating Chuck, Ledian counters Chuck surprisingly well and was able to sweep him, I got lucky with 3 crits in a row too.
Unfortunately, my Qwilfish died to a random trainer's Graveler selfdestructing, so I had to replace him with Azumarill which I'm happy to use. Oh, and Sunflora is here too.

I prefer GSC for more casual playthroughs. HGSS are great but I tend to get caught up on all the idiosyncratic details like EVs, natures, and abilities. And I instinctively think about post game shenanigans because the remakes offer so much to do once you beat Red whereas the originals, I’ll just think about the adventure at hand.

I actually agree with this a lot. Every Pokémon is consistent in gen 2. They’re always just as good as they would be. The only factor that really affects it is DVs but for in game it doesn’t really matter much.
If you breed for moves that’s another story. Some Pokémon go from trash to OP as fuck if you breed them some egg moves and start a new playthrough.
Murkrow with drill peck and faint attack egg moves is what I’m thinking. You can give totodile rock slide too.

Side note, I much prefer the pre physical special split games in some ways. Sure it makes some Pokémon type choices and stat distributions questionable, but they were still figuring out balancing, and there were no such thing as patches. I think pre split is SOVL incarnate.

Just beat red in my vc run of crystal on the 3ds, what an amazing game this is, there's genuinely so much love and soul crammed into this region and crystal specifically

I was particularly impressed with rediscovering how much use there is in the phone beyond "muh rattata" phone calls, you really feel like this is a lived in world

Also getting to experience the celebi event for the first time was great

Hard to say. I love both for different reasons. HGSS just has better battle mechanics (EVs instead of Stat EXP and physical/special split) and a better postgame, but GSC just oozes soul from its music, visuals, art, etc and is also much easier to get in to like other anons said. My ideal gen 2 experience is just GSC with modern mechanics (minus natures and IV bullshittery).

thanks, I was trying to utilize more of the mons that crystal specifically enables, almost a whole week grinding around in union cave before work trying to find and catch a damn teddiursa, 5% appearance rate, only in mornings which left me about 30-45 minutes a day before work to find, and they always instantly run, I ran out of balls at one point too and had to progress for a while then double back, but it was worth it, and it was a fun experience in its own way, gave a feeling of actually earning it

I also used phanpy for the entire playthrough but switched it out for tyranitar right at the end, donphan was super underwhelming, but ursaring slaughtered everything with return

i actually find myself more drawn to the stat exp for some reason, maybe just because its something different. i do prefer the physical special split and natures and abilities, i know plenty here prefer the old way, but i think there's something interesting about stat exp specifically

it may take longer to max out than ev training, and being able to max every stat is unbalanced for pvp, but in a pure pve story playthough its a nice way to always reward fighting random mons, everything you fight is worth it on some level while also not punishing you for wasting evs on an unneeded stat

As I was grinding stat exp, I was thinking that too. I guess that I don't really like it because besides PVP, for somebody like me, I have a very bad habit of trying to make everything "perfect". If there's a stat in the game with a high ceiling, I will probably take a crack at maxing it out.

a dream game for me would be one that combined elements of johtos time/day system and the season system from unova and then used them to create a bunch of distinct songs for each area depending on time of day like sinnoh, the season and whether you were standing, walking, running or interacting with npcs like unova

It's alright, it does what it needs to by giving Grass coverage. The main issue with it is that that's kinda the only thing it can do. I prefer Bellossom over it since it has slightly better speed and bulk, however if you evolve Sunkern at Lv.10 then you can have both Mega Drain and Razor Leaf which is good.

this is what made me go for bellossom instead, i realized i would have to go back, breed a new sunkern to then evolve because the lowest wild is 12, didn't feel like it was worth the effort

honestly though i had the same problem with bellossom, pretty much all it did was use grass attacks, really made me realize how amazing meganium is having access to body slam and all those support moves, if i reset i'd choose chikorita

Meganium is a solid Pokemon. I did a mono-grass run a lil while back and it did its job well. But the pokemon that carried the team to my surprise was Jumpluff, its Sleep Powder + Leech Seed combo is deadly. Sucks it doesn't get access to good coverage until Giga Drain in the post-game, but it doesn't need it. Headbutt is good for flinches.

Meganium is extremely underated. Its definitely the "worst" or the Johto starters to use in game, due to grass types having several poor match-ups, and having poor coverage, but for what it is (bulky grass type with support/utility moves) its a good member to have on a team.

Ironic it's probably the the best option against Whitney's Miltank and Clair's Kingdra (two of the hardest Pokemon before the Elite 4).

yeah i agree, people tend to look back at gen 2 in retrospect as a stand alone batch of mons like we have been getting since and criticize it for being mostly weak in battle, but gen 2's roster was more like an expansion pack of fun little critters to more fully flesh out the world, and in that respect they do wonderfully, the babies for instance are totally pointless competitively but they are so cute and bring depth to the roster

Gen 2 mons weren't even bad in battle on-release. You have obvious edge cases like Unown and Delibird but even the weak early games mons weren't that bad, here was a time when Ledian was usable in-game, it gehad access to the Ice/ThunderPunch fairly early giving it 75BP Bolt/Beam coverage which is decent in game even with 55SpA. Obviously Ledian was always a shitmon but was it merely on the level of other early game bugs at the time as opposed to being the patron saint of shitty Pokemon. Gen 2 Pokemon as a whole weren't worse than Gen 1 Pokemon. (of course Snorlax throws off the curve heavily in favor of Gen 1 mons, proving that GenWun privilege was always a thing to some extent),

Gen 2 Pokemon only started becoming bad when Game Freak started making perfectly optimized battle machines like Garhomp/Lando/Ferroseed/Toxapex/etc and giving their precious Gen1 mons special snowflake shit like broken movepools and double-dipping megas, while Gen 2 mons get nothing except majority of them getting erased from SwSh on the fucking anniversary of GS because Johtofans aren't worthy of having nice things apparently.

True, its obiosuthat GAme Freak always had some favoritism for Gen 1 Pokemon but even then the coverage issue during Gen 2 might have been a balancing attempt executed poorly due to not accounting for the coverage they already gave to gen 1 mons. Game Freak didn't go out of their way to spit on Gen 2 like they do in later gens.

fuck I remember for instance the manual (or maybe it was the guidebook but i remember it being the manual) explicitly points out that if you have a geodude from the old games its worth raising a new one to get "awesome new moves" like magnitude, where as there isn't a single gen 2 mon that learns that move, and mons like phanpy don't learn any ground moves at all until donphan finally gets earthquake at 49

A ton of gen 2 moves got such horrendous learnsets. One of the most egregious is Gligar getting absolutely NO ground moves outside of Earthquake exclusive to a Stadium 2 event. Not even Mud-slap, the move most pokemon can learn. And the best flying move it gets is Wing Attack as an egg move.

A lot of good moves on gen 2 mons were made egg move exclusive for no reason, it's like they really wanted to incentivize the new mechanics but hindered so many of the new pokemon in the process.

Team update after beating Claire, and no deaths! Her Kingdra was scary as always but a mix of Ledian's screens and Arbok's Sludge Bomb were able to secure the win.
Sneasel didn't have as big of an impact on the battle as I'd hoped but I feel like she'll be a valuable member in the Elite Four. This is not the final team tho.

Here you go, it's mainly just a limited Dex challenge I made recently. The premise is that you can only use pokemon that are bad or below average (in this gen). There aren't really any rules aside from:
>You cannot evolve your Starter, they are there to start you off.
>You cannot evolve Pikachu/Eevee, they are there just for fun since they're mascots.

The list has been updated a few times and I'm considering making some more. I find it more fun than doing the "450 challenge" because this allows you to still utilize final stage pokemon to their full potential and not just use only first or middle stage pokemon that are still pretty strong (Kadabra).

It's been really fun, using pokemon like Dunsparce, Qwilfish, and even Unown where very interesting. I recommend trying it out, either vanilla or nuzlocke too!

Desu, I would kill for a reality where gen 2 mons had less dogshit learnsets and they found a solution to the Kanto gym leaders being so underleveled. If there's a romhack that just did that and didn't add le newer gen mechanics except abilities, it would be golden. Romhackers are autistically obsessed with giving every previous gen parity with the newest gens rather than meaningfully building off the original games without adding in shit from future games (or adding their own fanfic bullshit). Sometimes I want Explosion and Self-Destruct to half defenses or, as much as I prefer the split: give Alakazam and Typhlosion insane coverage through learning the elemental punches. I just wish more romhacks can just "improve the weirdness" of pre-5th gen games instead of trying to make every game like the newest games. I would be the change I want to see, but I know that I can't ever complete it due to how overwhelming the work would be and how niche it would be if I did.

Not sure if it’s the best but the Perfect Crystal romhack gives the Kanto and Johto leaders their HGSS team levels but keeps the system of og crystal the same m, so no abilities, no evs, etc.

Final team update before the Elite Four, decided to grind up to lv. 50 to be on par with Lance. I also grinded Nuggets off of Pokefan Derek using the daylights saving time exploit to buy some Calcium for Sneasel and Ledian because I'm worried about those dragons.
Wish me luck.

Oh and I'm planning on drawing this team too sometime later, if the thread stays up longer then I will show it.

Thank you all for a magnificent Johto thread that I was sure would die within an hour of making it.
I failed my Gold nuzlocke a while back and I decided instead to start a crystal playthrough where I make my priority catching every pokemon possible without trading (can't trade for a while).
I will also focus on doing daily events and breaking my gameplay up into smaller chunks, the way the game was intended to be played.
So far I have:
Daibawashi the Hoothoot (will be flyer + has sleep)
Vino the Bellsprout (sleep powder, good catching mon)
Pepper the Gastly (mainly for mean look for those pesky runners and once again sleep)
Honey the Quilava
Boog the Spinarak (will replace with water type for travel)
Egg the Togepi (I'm actually gonna raise this one to Togetic before I decide if I'm boxing it or not)
I have 24 pokemon owned and just made it to Azalea, so I'm doing pretty okay! Almost 6 hours in, I did a lot of random grinding to get gastly to lvl 13 for mean look to make catching teddiursa and phanpy much easier.

Are you doing a nuzlocke or something? Chikorita is great, he's just kinda the hard mode compared to the other two because the first two gyms wipe the floor with him. Geodude should be able to solo both if you level him up to par though.
Only restart if you're doing a nuzlocke or challenge where if you wipe its GG.

Also try leveling up a geodude to at least 8 or 9 before trying, he's super clutch as well.
Probably the strongest early game pokemon you can get, pairs super well with totodile too.

And it's done, I won. That was such an intense fight, one of the most exhilarating final battles I've had in all my playthroughs. And the star member, or should I say, 5-star member of the team, Ledian, got the final shot in. Unfortunately, 3 pokemon ended up dying, but everyone was essential. Here's what happened if you want to read:

Will

>Surprisingly easy, I lead with Togetic and gave it Fire Blast so it can deal with his bugs, ESPECIALLY that Forretress, and his other pokemon went down easily with Arbok and Pikachu. I brought along a lot of berries too so status effects weren't an issue.
Bruno
>First battle I was kinda worried about since I have no psychic coverage, but Azumarill was a near perfect wall. His Hitmontop is super easy to setup on so I maxed out my defense, setup rain, and spammed Surf to win. I was really scared about his Machamp's Cross Chop tho, but luckily he never landed a crit on them.
Karen
>The spokesperson for my challenge. Another fight I was worried about, but it went very smoothly. Togetic's Safeguard was essential for her Umbreon, and even after being hit with a few Sand Attacks I was able to knock it out quickly with Returns.
Lance
>As expected, this was going to be the toughest one with my team's middling stats, I had to do a lot of thinking and smart switches. My initial strategy was to set up a potential Rollout combo, but of course it missed early on and his first Dragonite took out Azumarill. His Charizard proved to be a big issue now with Azumarill gone, and I ended up having to do a back n forth of tanking Flamethrowers and healing Togetic to finally take it out.

After tanking a Hyper Beam surprisingly well, I tried paralyzing it with Glare but it missed THREE times, having to heal once. Finally I did, but on the same turn it hit a Hyper Beam killing Arbok. So now I had to switch into the boy himself, Five Star, and after setting up just to be safe, I easily took it out with 2 Ice Punches. Absolutely mental.

I plan to continue onto the post-game and ultimately challenge Red because this was so fun, but I'll need to work on major replacements which sucks since Arbok and Sneasel has great TMs on them, but this whole challenge is about making do with what you've got.

Thank you guys for being interested in my lil adventure, I will probably get to work drawing the team later today.

A rock resistance might be nice just on principle, you have 3 mons weak to rock.
So ground, fighting, or steel types which would actually give you some good coverage and/or options.
Steelix, scizor (though not a rock resist) and machamp seem like great options. Also you could go for donphan or golem.
This team doesn't look like it'll struggle with any major battle already desu.
Typhlosion is super strong with good neutral coverage for most things
Xatu absolutely cucks Chuck and Bruno and many other matchups on typing alone
Politoed is a semi bulky water type with ice coverage
Ursaring is just a monster
Shuckle for pivoting/chip/memes
The only thing you're really missing is a way to nail dark and water types besides thunder punch from typhlosion.
I think go for an electric, fighting, steel or ground type.

I'll catch Slugma but I doubt I'll use it since I have Fire coverage, and maybe I'll use Kingler, tho I've been using my Krabby as the HM slave. I'm actually considering, and I know this is crazy, Corsola as the replacement.

Either Water or Normal, mostly Normal since it has so much versatility. Here's some team concepts:

Those three water options are relatively bulky and can support each other's weaknesses.
Azumarill: Surf / Rollout / Rest / Defense Curl [Mint Berry]
Lanturn: Thunder / Surf / Rain Dance / Thunder Wave [MiracleBerry]
Mantine: Surf / Ice Beam / Confuse Ray / Agility [BrightPowder]

Again, normal has so many options to choose from, and most of the pokemon in your selection are great. Bulk is very important so I'm focusing on that.
Ursaring: Return / ThunderPunch / Sleep Talk / Rest [Pink Bow]
Miltank: Earthquake / Body Slam / Heal Bell / Milk Drink [Leftovers]
Blissey: Fire Blast / Softboiled / Protect / Toxic [MiracleBerry]

Finally finished grinding up the new teammates. Dunsparce returns temporarily, I plan to replace him with Murkrow later so I didn't grind him all the way up. I'm pretty excited to use a Corsola, I plan for it to be my "secret weapon" in the Red fight. Gligar is a bit meh since it gets no stab but its defense is good and it has two immunities so I can make use of that.

By the way if you (or anyone else) need some grinding advice, the SS. Aqua trainers can be rebattled multiple times daily.

>Check if it's Monday, Friday, Wednesday or Sunday
>If it's Monday or Friday board the SS Aqua at Olivine
>If it's Wednesday or Sunday board the SS Aqua at Vermillion
>battle all the trainers
>sleep in the bed in your room on the ship
>arrive in your destination
>fly back to Olivine/Vermillion on the same day
>reboard, All the trainers will be available to battle again.
>Repeat for as many times as you want as long as it's on the same day
>You can also do this from the Vermillion port but on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

From what I remember it gives pretty decent experience (enemies range from level 25-35 and trained Pokémon give more experience than wild mons)

Note: this does not work in HGSS, ship trainers can not be rematched even if you reboard.

A while back a downloaded a rom hack called HGSS Golden Edition, that I never actually played but this thread has been thinking about picking it up. I went to look up info about it and it has been updated since then. One change was to give the Pokemon their gen 8 move pools. Not sure if I want to stick with the old version or try the recent one.

Finally finished with the Elite Four team drawing, yet again it took a good bit but I'm happy with how it came out. It was really fun drawing Sneasel, I tried drawing her more close to how I interpreted her sprite art. I also really like how the Azumarill came out, very round and very aggressive.

You killed any modicum of challenge. Why do people do this? Youre not "on par," lance only has one level 50 Mon. You are supposed to go into the elite 4 in gsc in the late 30s to early 40s.

In normal playthroughs I would only get my team up to at most 45 but because this run was only using below average pokemon, I wanted to play it safe. Even being at lv 50 the fight was still tough and fun.

The Elite Four does give much more exp and ofc money but as the other anon said it's more difficult to grind in unless your team is either very strong or you're using Exp. Share.

Yes you can battle them whenever as many times as you wish. On mondays/wednesdays the rival shows up too. His crobat evolved, he lost all of his edge, and the champion/red theme plays instead of his usual theme. You have to have fought him at mt. Moon first though.

I gotchya sorry for being harsh. I wasnt thinking about the fact that you were doing a sort of shitmon run. I just hate when people think they HAVE to grind to the exact level of their opponent. Theyre so used to being overleveled from the nu exp share and they use the fact that they "have to" grind as a criticism of gsc/hgss.

Btw this is ultimate soul. Gold and silver had seperate sprites for all 251 mons.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from, it's kinda like complaining about Whitney's Miltank or something. Yes it's tough, but that means the game wants you to think about how to overcome that challenge, not just over level to win. Tho some people like to do that and good on them.

Also yeah I always liked that Gold & Silver had separate sprites, even if I played Gold more often. Makes the two versions even more distinct, it's also cool seeing how Crystal adapted said sprites by either improving the colors or making combinations of both version's sprites. Sometimes just outright making a whole new one.

Yeah I loved all the polish that crystal added. The animated sprites and signposts appearing as you change routes were great additions among the others. I always play crystal instead of g/s unless I want to do ACE with the case.

At Pallet Town rn, I always loved gen 2's arrangement of its theme, very melancholy.

Also I never knew that the Trainer House in Viridian City allowed you to upload a team from Stadium 2 to fight, I'll have to try that out someday.

Beat Blue, the fight was going pretty well until his Gyarados where it set up rain and kept hitting all of its Hydro Pumps. Had to bring in Corsola to tank them, she was able to take a hit with each heal but when I went in for the kill, it killed Corsola with a high roll hit.
That really sucks, Corsola was doing great and I was really looking forward to bringing it to the Red fight, I even taught it Protect and Toxic for a plan I had in mind. But oh well.

Good morning gamers, today will just be a grind day so probably not many updates. After the death of Corsola I decided that the best replacement wouldn't be another water type, but instead this sluggy thing right here. I have my reasons. This would be my first time using a Magcargo in gen 2.
For a long time I thought Slugma and Magcargo were gen 3 pokemon because of how uncommon they are in gen 2, same goes for a couple others like the Marill and Chinchou line and Skarmory.
