Third versions are generally more difficult than the base game, and SM were already tougher than usual because of the totems, NPC EVs/IVs, and improved team variety in battles.
It was basically random luck.

I love Gen 5, but this isn't a good argument as Challenge Mode was hidden behind the fucking Key System. You'd need to restart the game to get the full benefit of the mode, in a game with one save file that encourages you to bond with Pokemon throughout the game.

It's not even close to hard.
The Pokemon is just big, Bigger Shitmons (By the exception of ULTRA BIG NECROZMA) are never a threat.
