i don't know much about Marnie's kit but I think she's your typical strike type DPS. if you need a fairy type and don't have Diantha it might be worth getting, but personally I like weather teams too tho I've had Steven for years.

SS Kris is plenty tanky (+4 SpDef, FA4, master passive) and damage is more important than bulk anyway. Fast clears > slow clears. Fix your skill issue

Asking a follow up question. I made a new account yesterday, and I rollled these units and am working to complete the chapters to get Blue.

Genuine advice time.
Tl;dr
>Supports are the best type but you start with good ones already so don't need to prioritize them.

Both Hop and Sycamore are top tier in their roles and they are both supports. Giovanni is a top tier DPS but only if you have his mega evolution unlocked (which is currently unavailable as it was an event reward, but I'm sure they'll rerun it eventually). Giovanni, Ghetsis, and Cyrus are all decent DPS even without their upgrades unlocked (Ghetsis hasn't had his yet) and Ghetsis can sort of do a reasonable impression of a debuffer if you need one. Silver becomes quite good with his upgrade but is underwhelming without it. Oak is decent and I used to use him as a tank before I got better options.

It is generally true that supports/tanks are your most important units and will likely be your bottlenecks on things like Legendary Gauntlets, Champion Stadium, or Legendary Arena but you start the game off with two great ones and SS Blue should almost definitely be your pick for the Kanto trio and he's also a 10/10 support.

In general I find my most useful units fall into the following categories:

you're good on these for now but don't sleep on new supports as they release because they are excellent. Some of the supports in the regular pool are also top tier while this is less true for DPS and other types of units. I would mark these as a low priority for a new player until you've filled your other spots as well.

These are the most common unit type. They can generally be subdivided into 'brainless' DPS which slot easily into any team and 'niche' DPS which require specific setups like weather or specific buffs because they cannot buff themselves easily. Furthermore, some DPS have the majority of their damage in their sync move while others are more for their regular moves. I would encourage you to pick up a good spread of DPS from different regions and of different types to help you finish quests that require you to use x number of Hoenn pairs or whatever. For free options, Hau, Gio, and Barry are likely your best bets but just by rolling on fair/masterfair banners you'll get a bunch of other options.
>Tech
Most techs now are either damage enhancers for a specific type (either through zones or weather); debuffers, or DPS that they didn't make a striker for some reason. I find that a strong debuffer is really important for more drawn out battles and of these I think Champion Iris is my most invaluable sync pair in that she is the pair that I would have the most trouble finding a replacement for and is a big part of toxic-stall strategies. I don't think debuffers are all that important for newer players though so you can largely ignore them for now.
Zone setters can often double as DPS on their own and are all worth having and almost all near top-tier. I'd be very conscious of any new zone setters that release.
Weather setters are good but require the most investment as a new player. If you want to make rain/sun/sand/hail work you should commit to one of those and prioritize future pairs that benefit from them. Archie is one of the strongest pairs in the game so if he shows up on a reroll you can use him and SS Blue to trivialize 90% of content in this game. We have no clue if/when he'll be rerun though.

Some final points:
-I think that SS Leaf is extremely underrated. AoE toxic is very good and she increases damage significantly by AoE debuffs to both defenses. She speeds up sync countdowns and provides big heals too.
-On that note, I forgot to mention healing and also somehow forgot to mention that Skyla is one of the best tank/supports as well. Healing is a powerful effect that mostly shows up on tanks/supports but not always. Most heals require sync grid upgrades (MP Referesh and Master Healer) to really be great though.
-The following pairs are in the standard banners and are very strong. Asterisks indicate top tier units that are on par or stronger than limited pairs in comparable roles:

>Phoebe (Physical support/tank)

I think the canon Chart Anon has been on a hiatus and/or is dead so I took over this week.

I included all the posts I saw in this thread (20) plus my own. Some observations:
-May with clear dominance this week. Being one of the absolute strongest water types while ALSO being able to set rain and being in the general pool makes her extremely popular.
-Sidney making a surprising second place. Most often I feel we have supports in the top few spots but I don't know if dark is just lacking good strikers or if Sidney has way more fans than I thought.
-Kris proving herself the most popular of the Johto trio this week. Beaten out by 3 other supports though.
-Cobalion making it to the top 10 surprised me. BP 5* units are pretty uncommon to see. Maybe one day Regirock will get some love... but I doubt it.
-Only one brave anon bothered to use our favorite bald eagle of freedom on this 4th of July.

Gio is strong as fuck. Maxes out his Attack with a single button press and can nuke with his max moves. He also covers 3 types. At 3/5 he gains a node on his grid that lets him crit all the time without having to waste turns buffing said crit. His only downside is that he's a gauge hog so you'll need to buff the team's speed or use gauge refresh skills.

As far as I know he's an overtuned crit machine. His sync move is unique in that he's guaranteed a critical hit since it has the "higher crit chance" description, so you don't have to waste time with a reset if you miss the sync crit, which is nice. He also get damage boosts from confusion and can confuse the entire enemy team instantly.

People hate on her, but I've used her since she came out, and she's still good enough to clear content with. She also has the unique point of her Sync being able to inflict Sleep on the opponent as well as deal damage, and ever since her 6EX came out, that extends to AoE Damage + Sleep. It is pretty cool, although for the full damage of her Sync you want them to already be Asleep when her Sync goes off. She pairs really well with Clefairy Lillie I've found, with whatever your preferred Sleep Setter is in the third slot between Delphox Serena, Primarina Elio, Darkrai Cyrus, or pretty much whatever else you got.

It was said from interviews that devs had no plan on adding any TV anime character to the game(and they say it will be exclusively game characters, leaving no debate whether any outside character appearing at all) so they are saying they are upset about that.
Also some want anime and game line to be divided and not mixed.

that's why I said that too, the more useful aspect to her weaker move is that it is AoE, which is sometimes useful for finishing off sidemons while dealing a little damage to the main one, but even that is pretty rare, altho nice to have when you can take advantage of it

You can pull off some cool things with his refreshable protect move and 60% flinch move allows you to perform well even if he's extremely frail.
Many launch sync pairs have nearly unfixable kits who won't be saved by a generic sync grid. Kahili is another example.

As the Jigglypuff defender earlier in this thread, don't grab Jigglypuff for inflicting Sleep. It barely does that, and to get the most of it you want it paired with other Sleep Setters to boost the damage it does. Definitely get a Sync Pair you don't already have though. Are you trying to clear or are you trying to get the event missions done too?
For clearing, your big issues are AoE status and evasion faggotry. Each issue can be tackled separately.
>Status
If the initial target is immune to the status (Paralysis and Poison I think) it won't spread to your others. Some grids give you pointless status immunity which I guess isn't pointless this time around. If you are desperate you could use lucky cookies but I highly discourage that because Vigilance is so much better.
Alternatively, Barry is a strong sync-nuke striker that has access to full heal and Sycamore is a free unit that randomly might remove all status effects each time he attacks and also can remove them all with his trainer move once.
>Evasion bullshit
You can buff accuracy/debuff evasion but there aren't very many good pairs for that. A number of powerful strikers (Giovanni, SS Red off the top of my head but definitely others) have access to Piercing Gaze to make sure that moves never miss. SS Ethan has it in his grid and normally it seems wasted since he buffs accuracy naturally, but in this case it might be good for you.
Alternatively, Grimmsley can use Snatch (he's the 'intended' way to deal with the buffs if you look at the event missions) and Brycen can use Haze.
>Damage Reduction
You can either use brick break, a unit like N or SS Lillie who ignores damage prevention, or just power through it. I think when this one first came out I used SS Blue, Barry, and Misty to power through it all with sync nukes. Even on 80% special reduction I was still dealing respectable damage with enough sync buffs.

Nate is actually good. He can 1v3 some content. People just hate him, because his stats got fucked over by DeNA when he came out due to being released alongside an Event where his Stats were boosted for using him over other Sync Pairs. They balanced his stats around that one Event idiotically, which forever hurt his potential. I've honestly been using a 6EX one for content for awhile now though, and he still performs plenty well, although now that I have Tornadus and Lugia, I'm not sure how much more I'll keep using him.

Just took a good look at Lucian's kit since he spooked me on some rolls and this dude has 6 nodes for boosting his sync damage. 2 of which you can access at 2/5 merges. He even has a bunch of sync damage multipliers. Dena really wanted to over tune this dude into THE Psychic sync nuker it seems. Too bad his one offensive move is shitty Confusion.

I think that's the point. He's a godly debuffer that you use alongside a striker and then sync nuke with to get rid of the center-mon quickly.
It's gimmicky but I prefer sync pairs that are designed with a specific niche or gameplan in mind as compared to just universal goodstuff.

Why does TPC hold the game back by imposing a year wait restriction on the newest games' characters instead of letting DeNA put them out when people actually care about them, before the next games' set kills all the excitement about them? I don't think they'll bother with the eveelutions since Erika with Leafeon is already in. I think they'll give them Dialga and Palkia Origin forms and have them be the Hisui pride and spirit master fairs.
