You could say Gen 3 cannot be understood without Colosseum/XD because you literally can't complete the National Dex in RS without them (Ho-Oh and Lugia are necessary to complete the National Dex in RS, and they can only be obtained through those games or through events).
You could say Gen 4 cannot be understood without Battle Revolution since that's the only Gen 4 game where you can have random Wifi matchups.
