You want an example of open world vs. non-open world? Mario 64 is open world since you can do its main objectives freely, in completing any number of stars in a level in any order before proceeding. Mario Galaxy is NOT open world because there is only one curated way to complete the objective for each star and you can ONLY do that method from the moment you choose the path in the world select.
PLA is open world. The main objective is catching Pokemon can you can do that freely. There are a number of different ways and strategies you can go about reaching the next star rank.
