I like the region itself and the games were fun but I kinda blame Gen 3 for the trend of overdesigned ugly legendaries.

Gen 2 had uglier legendaries, and lugias fanbase is one of the most deranged in the whole series, rivaling lucario and the snakes.

I thought this as well until I remembered how Ky/Gro/Ray looked. You can see where they influenced future shitty legendary designs.

I think Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza looked great, but sadly gen 3 started the shitty trend of increasing the number of legendaries each gen.

I like Hoenn too, I only wish it was more diverse in the water section, but I guess that would trivialize the diving and fishing content.

It had water diversity, though.
It had narrow sea routes.
It had wide open sea routes.
It had rivers.
It had waterfalls.
It had underground rivers/lakes/waterfalls.
It had (as the first pokemon game) puddles that showed your reflection. God, those puddles looked so good back then.
It even had lava (though of course you couldn't swim in it).

Groudon and Rayquaza I can understand (Groudon especially looks like a Gen IV Legendary with its spikes), but not Kyogre. Kyogre looks underdesigned and kind of boring if anything.
