>>50886019I'll put it this way, PTU does a really good job of translating the games battle system to a tabletop format. There are a bunch of changes to account for the new format, but overall the gameplay flow of "league battles" remains very faithful imo
Where the game differs tremendously is the emphasis on the trainers, themselves, and the way they can manipulate and enhance their pokemon in battle. This is where things like "trainer classes" make a difference, since you can do things like bloat a specific stat for your pokemon or increase their critical hit ranges, change the weather, etc.
Personally, it's the most fun I've had playing Pokemon in a very long time and it rejuvenated my love for the franchise. This campaign with the group I'm playing with has been going on for about 2 years now. I'm actually almost spoiled because of it, since the games just don't scratch my Pokémon itch anymore.
But that also isn't to say that the game isn't without its flaws. This is why I think its important for you to find a good group of players who are willing to work with each other to keep the experience fun. If there's a system/mechanic that doesn't work well for you, change it. We've homebrewed the shit out of our game to fit our playstyles.
