normal 6v6 battle is just “they switched in weavile after my Landorus got a kill, better switch to my Toxapex”
Rotation battle (higher iq gameplay): “Their Weavile is in against my Landorus. I think I will switch to my Toxapex. But they could be rotating out into their Alakazam and kill me with a Psychic! I know, maybe I should stay in, they go Alakazam and use Psychic, and I kill it with scarf u-turn”
Why did rotation battles get axed?

I don't see how they're a higher IQ level meta at all. I think adding in a bunch of more shit to worry about deters from logical and meaningful plays. Variance is the reason R6S never became a competitive FPS like it was marketed as.
If you have to play cautiously enough due to random holes in a wall that threaten you like in that game, or if you're the LoL S2 championship where people are cheering for wards being taken down, or if you have to worry about effectively 12 different moves coming from 3 targets to your 3 targets, you don't inherently have a higher IQ game, you just have a game where both players are walking on eggshells until someone slips.

Rotation battles had a lot of guesswork, and was quite unbalanced in the way you could boost up a Pokemon and then just rotate it to keep it safe until it can sweep.

Triples battles are by far the most high IQ format that didn't deserve to get axed, which is why it still has an active playerbase in Japan.

I personally liked the Battle Royale mode in Gen 7. It requires a whole different meta, but it never got the chance to really develop

You're probably not wrong, but neither Gen 5 or Gen 6 really made them that appealing to play with being hideous in the former, and extremely laggy in the latter. Unfortunately, Game Freak would rather scrap the format entirely, instead of putting it on the hardware which can actually handle it when given the opportunity.
