The designs were never the problem, al gen has a mix of designs that works and designs that are mediocre

ITs the game art style what draws off some people.

To me its the textures/color what doesn't convince me. I'd rather have something with the same models but on a more cell shading style

Honestly, this.
The art looks good, and I'm sure as soon as we do see official artwork for these characters I'm gonna love them.
But the human models in gen 9, as far as we've seen, have all been shit.

Design doesn't matter when in game models look like ass. As soon as you see them without the blur the garage style will make them disgusting like everything else so far

To me it feels more like a disconnection between some character designers.
Gym leaders seem to be the same over the top shonen aesthetics Pokemon is known for.
MC, Nemona and the professors seem very lack luster in comparison, toned down hairstyles and outfits. Even SWSH bothered to make the uniforms stand out amongst from one another.
The art directions going to be pretty all over the place this gen for sure.
