Nope, I was there and it was my favorite cartoon back then. I forced myself to rewatch it and it's honestly kind of disgusting how they destroyed the pokemon universe. Meanwhile Gold and Silver were my first games and yet now I think japanese Red and Green(not the godawful remakes) are the by far the best games in the series. Unlike you I don't let nostalgia cloud my judgement.

I can genuinly say I enjoy gen1 the most Kanto aside, the modern anime is shallow in comparison and the original 151 pokemon and the world was peak kino. I enjoy every generation, and have followed the series since the start but nostalgia aside, gen1 is peak comfy. Red/blue/yellow were amazing, i dont care for green because i dont speak Japanese and im not a retarded weeb who thinks everything Japanese is superior, i just enjoy pokemon for what it is.

At the end of the day the anime is a part of TPCI, and pokemon isnt that serious. I dont like gen 5 so much but i dont cry about it, pokemon evolves.

The anime is a bit of fun if you let go and just enjoy ashs quest to become a pokemon master, the original anime was amazing with great art, story and extra flavor to the pokemon world.

The only bit that gets a bit old is team rocket being in every episode

Spoken like a true genwunner. Just cause it was first in the series and most of its concepts were improved upon in later games doesn't mean it's the best. I started with gen 1 too and I have nothing but love for it but it's literally just nostalgia talking. They're held together with the programming equivalent of thoughts and prayers, they are hilariously broken games and fun to mess around with but they're not the best in the series. But, having said that, the series has declined so much that gen1 is unironically top tier. After 25 years, it shouldn't be, but that's how it is.

I do still like revisiting Gen 1, and 2 alongside it. The adventure has aged very well. The level of freedom that you had to get lost in the world and figure out how to progress makes it special. Red was hard for me as a kid, but coming back to it years later, knowing all the tricks, all the shortcuts, all the optional routes. Its fun to rediscover this game and have a laugh at my younger self. The series has lost more and more of that philosophy with each passing Generation, only now tinkering with open world game design because fucking Zelda made it trendy.
