This is not subjective, even if the Cyber Sleuth duology was a solid addition, nothing beats the foundational gameplay of World and what sets it apart from other "mon" games, even if that's also the reason they unfortunately don't sell well, compared to other cash-cow franchises or fellow bandai namco brands.

What foundations? Each World game has an entirely unique systems. Two is a dungeon crawler, three is just a story game, and four is like an action RPG beat em up. The two games based on 1's style aren't numbered entries. Also I forget if the Savers game is labeled a World game in Japan like it is in the west but it's like a kiddy SMT clone or something isn't it? I admit I didn't play that one.

I love the original World but honestly how drastically different the World games are made them feel special and I wish we could see that again instead of people acting as if 1 and it's spinoffs are the only titles in the series.

Why do people keep doing this shit? Why do people keep comparing Pokémon and Digimon designs like they are the same thing? Pokémon designs are meant to be natural as if they were regular animals in their world and when they evolved, they meant to look like a natural (some of them) change because of their growth in power or environment. Digimon doesn't follow that design choice since they are meant to be data and as such, they can become literally anything, and it would make sense. They are nothing alike.

I'll never forget the dubbed anime. I never watched that specific season of digimon but caught a single scene that had that digimon. Mostly.
A lot of early Pokemon were also original takes on traditional RPG monsters, especially from Dragon Quest. Muk is supposed to be a slime, Voltorb is a mimic, etc.
Digimon has a lot of heavy kaiju influences too, it's honestly shown more than in Pokemon. Its influences are more varied since Digimon are more varied. I think there might be some slight SMT influence too but that's probably because SMT was also influenced a lot by American 90's comics like Spawn

I mean, Digimon straight up has actual recycled kaiju sprites from a scrapped Godzilla vpet, that they later redesigned to be legally distinct when they got art. Like Hedorah and King Ghidorah. But outside of that they didn't really lean into kaiju designs too much until more recently, it was mostly just their own aesthetic while Pokemon was explicitly trying to invoke kaiju visuals.

If I remember right they did name drop Megaten in an interview while they were talking about Nefertimon’s design. Something along the lines of how they try to add their own spin on digimon designs to make them digimon as opposed to adapting the basis with notable accuracy like how Kaneko did? I’m too lazy to go find the quote, but yeah there’s probably a notable amount of influence from SMT and they both derive from similar influences. (Like with your example, Zaou Gongen is pretty obviously Spawn inspired.) Toku monster designs are another source of inspiration I’ve noticed between the two franchises.

But yeah there was also notable sprite crossovers going on at the time, like how Oyajitchi and King Deviltchi’s sprites were modified (very slightly in the case of King’s) into Nanimon and Devimon respectively. Same with how we got Mametchi and Kuchipatchi in cloaks for Magical Witches which then got callbacks in Digimon by directly namedropping it’s setting as Wizarmon’s origins. I miss old Bandai VPets. New tamagotchi designs don’t do anything for me, and I wish we’d get a color screen digimon vpet that isn’t the VB even if I do still like the classic pixel look.

Counterpoint; The most "Pokemon" Pokemon, as directly stated by Game Freak is Nidoran Male. Nidoran is also a 1-1 ripoff of Baragon. Meaning "Pokemon" as an aesthetic is supposed to invoke kaiju similarities. Most Digimon don't follow kaiju designs in the slightest, and most don't even get "giant" so much as they just get sort of big.

Yeah it was the V5 that used recycled sprites. Deltamon and Raremon in particular should be readily apparent as to what kaiju they're supposed to be (and then compare it to their actual art and see the "please don't sue us" effort they put in).

It wouldn't surprise me if both were true at the same time. They get licensing for a tribute vpet and it falls through, so they recycle the assets and make it anyways under their own license. The original vpet used the Mothra Tamagotchi as codebase and asset pool, and DarkTyranomon in V5 is a very slightly updated Godzilla sprite taken straight out of the Mothra Tamagotchi, so it would make sense to me.

I know this and they're some of my favorite designs for how bulky they are, but even in gen 1 they already started getting drowned out with more cutemons becoming more of the face of series. I feel like the amount of traditional classic kaijumon have dropped in each generation

Honestly you could just rip 120 odd monsters from digimon, and shove them in a new pokemon game and more than likely the dex would come out as one of the better ones in modern pokemon. Cause digimon has some really good designs.
