I have a weird hunch that it will work similar to poke pelago or wonder trade. Hear me out: to explore and understand time travel, you volunteer your Pokemon because plot reasons dictate that it can't be done by a human. You choose a pokemon, it functionally disappears into time and is not accessible for a short while in real time. The Pokemon comes back with "research" but really it just comes back with items and experience. Some Pokemon will actually evolve or change forms when you do this most do not

Hard to say without really knowing anything concrete about the game.

But we jumped the shark a while ago with every version of pokemon being canon due to interdimensional travel and alternate reality timelines connected through link cable technology.

It's gonna be this region's dynamax. All pokemon will be able to use the mechanic but it'll only be for stat/move/ability/typing etc change, while other Pokemon will have past/future forms with signature move or ability etc like gigantimax.
