I played UM and there it's clear some of that lolmasaladas personality is a deliberate act. Hau doesn't just lack seriousness, he's afraid to be serious. He wants to avoid the pain of losing and the reality of not being good enough. So he opts to not be serious and not be taken seriously by others, being all laid-back, overly chummy, spouting cheesy lines about how it's all about fun, and not "really" trying. Because you can't fail if you don't try, right? Gladion easily sees through his bullshit and calls him out on it (just as Hau does to him; it's great how the two are foils to each other). But even his pokemon start to get tired of his pussy bullshit. Because Hau is failing and realizes this when shit gets too serious for him to keep hiding behind that facade of nonchalance. Hau starts to bee true to himself and put in the effort, even if it he fails.
All in all, there is a relatable character there beneath the surface and a good lesson to be learned.
