What is the point of telling a pokemon to dodge in the anime?

The fuck even is the point of telling your pokemon to dodge? Is the pokemon just so retarded off the get go that it has no idea how to get out of the way of a painful attack?

Yes? I assume you don't watch the anime because there are times when a trainer might use the attacking move to counter, use a move to counter, or use some other strategy that isn't just dodging. It happens in the show a lot, if a pokemon automatically dodged without the trainer's permissionthen all of that went out of the window.

It's up to the trainer to decide whether dodging or taking the hit is the best tactical decision. Sometimes, dodging just leaves you wide open for another attack.

I always figured it was a timing thing where if they called the dodge too early, it'd give the opponent more time to react. And then there's rare moments where trainers will intentionally let their pokemon take damage (either for abilities like Justified, Blaze, etc. or moves like Reversal)
