Him going AWOL was just bad writing. Also Ash catching gen 1 Pokemon but not Tentacool, Tentacruel, Spearow, or Fearow is a big mistake seeing as in Ritchie's match a Spearow fought a Tentacool and Ash and Ritchie catch the same Pokémon
