And Lance lost despite his pokemon easily being considered stronger pokemon by smogon compared to Diantha.
A better way to measure it is simply through how it would realistically play out between living things not trying to get killed, have this matchup for example: a voltorb vs any pokemon that doesn't have earthquake. Yeah voltorb will lose in competitive, but if we try to imagine how the fight would turn out, the voltorb is so fast it can dodge a lot and do some damage to the other pokemon before being defeated and then factoring in the other 2 remaining pokemon, maybe that trainer wins. Let's say a voltorb vs a gyarados, it is so one sided in favour if the voltorb, but that doesn't mean the trainer or the gyarados didn't prepare to at least do something against electric types, at least a sacrificial stomp from gyarados against the ground trying to hit voltorb. Or else we end up with autists around post 50 or so posting smogon pokemons and claiming 3 legendaries are totally their favourite :)
