The rules of the tournament allows the use of Mega, Z-Moves or Dynamax. There is no cheating. If stupid ass Iris so useless she can't find a Mega - it is her problem, even no-brainer Ash have Mega Lucario. Cynthia putting this child into the dirt was an absolute justice

plot-wise Iris should have beaten Cynthia as it ties up most of her hanging plot threads (getting to rematch Ash, losing but beating her idol and cementing herself as the best dragon user beforehand)

It was never a hanging thread. Iris challenged Cynthia knowing she was completely outmatched during a small Cynthia BW cameo.
The anime turned that into something more than it was. And there's no reason to think this is the end either, since both trainers can get stronger over time.
