I always thought he was some eccentric old man who has been puttering around in caves and training pokemon for a good half of a century.
His pokemon are ancient fossils, machines and metal dinosaurs, it makes sense that he would use pokemon that are similar to himself and that wouldn't be past their prime due to old age.
The new narrative is he has these pokemon because he's a mid 30s millionaire trust fund kid who just likes having fancy expensive things? Like new high tech powerful machine pokemon, or expensive technology that brings fossils back to life and a Pokemon that is a priceless ancient artifact from a long dead civilization.
I guess he doesn't have grey hair anymore he has his hair dyed silver because it's the hip new trend?
