Blastoise ruined it. Kanto almost has 9 perfect starter stages and then Blastoise drops the ball hard.

This but with Venusaur. Such a boring design. GF/Nintendo were wise for releasing the gen 1 games as red and blue with Charizard and Blastoise instead of green with venusaur.

the true reason is that Blastoise never been good in the games after Gen1.
90s kids thoughts "WOW CANNONS = HE CAN DESTROY EVERYTHING XD" but they grew up and started to understand stats and they realized Blastoise was shit.
7 gens later and Blastoise never been good and the anime stopped shilling the line for a very long time while Bulbasaur kept being shilled in the anime and Venusaur earned its respect alone by how it kept being among the best pokemon in pvp in every gen.

Notice how Blastoise fans don't even get involve in Kanto starter wars because they know Blastoise stands no chance in any ground.
it's surpassed by other water pokemon in Kanto and it's the worst Kanto starter in meta.
all these things made Blastoise fade became less popular.

That's the problem - the cannons are unnatural and don't really fit in with the designs of its previous forms. Blastoise would be more at home in Digimon than Gen 1 Pokemon; that being said, we've had worse designs that are even MORE Digimon-esque in later generations that make it seem tame in hindsight, but the fact that it's a normal turtle with fucking cannons grafted onto it is still very weird when you look at the other Pokemon released that generation - they're either all biological or all artificial (like Voltorb or Magnemite), but there's nothing with abnormal parts literally grafted onto them like Blastoise.

They didn't release Green because they polished it up and gave us the third version, Blue, instead. We got Blastoise on the front because the other two starters were already in use by the other two versions, not because GF were being 'wise' about it.

While I don't mind the Bulbasaur line, the Charmander line is actually pretty consistent with what it's based off of. The whole line is based on the (mythological) Salamander, a lizardlike fire entity that grows into a real dragon as it ages, and we see the transition pretty clearly as Charmander evolves (and it continues on with its Mega forms, with Charizard X literally gaining the Dragon typing).
Blastoise is the odd one out here, because those grafted-on cannons come out of nowhere - there's no indication that it's going to get literal guns growing out of it at any point in its previous forms - until it suddenly has them.
