There are already several plot points from both games that could be used to craft a decent story. For example:
>Cyrus is still alive and we don't know what he was doing all this time after he swore return to reach his goal.>Volo is still alive in the end of LA and also swear return.>Dawn/Lucas are still in Hisui.>Ingo is still in Hisui,>When ingo disappeared from Unova?>What is doing Emmet while Ingo is missing? (they could make Emmet travel to Sinnoh looking for clues about what happened to Ingo. It's even a good excuse to bring more cast members from Unova or even travel to unova)>What is doing Barry while his best friend is missing?>Why there is not data of D/P clans and celestica people in the present? What Happend with they and that data?>Was Cogita really the writter of the old letters? If she was, Where is her? (Since she shoul've still alive due to her immortality).Well, they could also made many tearjerker moments very easily with that setup.
