Sticking to regional forms would be much better for making a point than "reverse-engineered hypotheticals" because we do not *truly* know how they'd have handled Manky or Machop or Nidoran in Gen 8, nor Crabrawler in gen 1.
Seriously, they completely gave up on trying to represent the watercolor concept art by gen 3. You are, yourself, using revamp artwork rather than the original watercolors to "prove the point". The gen 1 art style is just not usable because it's a way of getting across the 3d shape from a 2d image, *Concept Art* rather than a usable design.
