The fact that Charizard remained an asshole until it remembered, “Oh yeah, this kid saved my life once” while he was dying AGAIN cements this. It has nothing to do with badges. Charizard was an asshole simply because he forgot Ash saved his life.
And EVEN if badges were somehow the case, that problem is fixed the moment Ash wins his first league battle against another trainer with 8 badges.
