I was an assistant of Colress who decided to pursue my lifelong dream. To catch Ho-Oh and go on the pokemon journey I never had as a child. Colress comes along, intrigued. He wanted to compare my already existing bond with my Misdreaveus to the bond I would build with any pokemon I caught. I go to my home region of Johto.
I randomly found Ingo passed out in the Sinjoh Ruins and he was suffering memory loss after trying to return home (Again). He wanted to remember his early years as a trainer, and joined me. He and Colress are mentor figures.
After squashing a Team Rocket revival attempt while it was still weak, I continued on.
I undergo much character development where I gain a newfound respect for pokemon. Eventually I learn people around me have lives just as rich, complicated, and messy as my own. This gives me wisdom, and I grow closer to my pokemon as my respect and understanding of them grows. When I eventually find Ho-Oh, I catch and release it. Ho-oh is a majestic pokemon that deserves to fly free across the land, and I don’t have any place in that life as a simple human. Colress implores me to keep it for science, but Ingo encourages me to stick to my decision. Colress attempts to catch Ho-Oh again and I have to fight him with Ho-Oh as backup in a double battle.
After I defeat him, Colress says that I gave him enough data. He actually didn’t care about Ho-Oh but wanted to provoke me into fighting him for real. He says that Ho-Oh and I have built a strong bond. I decide that I’m going back home and going to learn how to be a pokemon researcher and archeologist. Emmet offers to give me a job on the Battle Train as thanks for finding his brother Ingo. I ask Colress if I can help with his studies as a trainer on the Battle Train, and he says yes.
Yes I know I technically had seven pokemon in my fight against Colress but my team might have been BTFO otherwise and I had to make it convincing.
