To this day I am baffled as to why they didn't just go alongside with Leon to solve such incidents. That's exactly what they did with Lance back then, and even with Steven and Cynthia to a lesser extent on the third version games.
Even his victories in the anime aren't all that impressive when you get to it
Lance gave him an even match, and then this same Lance, the Gyarados in specific, got destroyed by Gourgeist who was not even Diantha's ace Pokemon. The same Gyarados that went even with Leon's Charizard.
Raihan? Ash oneshot the G-Max Duradulon that Leon G-Maxed with Charizard to defeat with the Lucario Genkidama without even going Mega.
Flint? What's so amazing about a Champion beating an E4? It's what things are supposed to be like.
And last but not least then we are supposed to see him comfortably beating Alan as some amazing feat, but the thing is, even if Alan is a well known and by anime standards powerful character, he only looked so insurmountable back then because things were at Regional League level. Now we are at Champion level. I'm no Alanfag, but I don't dislike the guy either, so thinking of him as him as more than low-E4 level, maybe mid-E4 level if being generous feels silly. Whatever it is the case, Alan is not a Champion, so at the end of the day it doesn't look or feel impressive. It only looks like they brought the only other well-known guy with a Charizard to make him job because only Leon's Charizard is allowed to look good now.
