I haven't entered these threads since the first Alain vs Leon battle, so I'm probably going to be repeating common opinions, but good fucking lord, this tournament is garbage. Almost no strategy involved, both sides just keep taking turns hitting each other and getting oneshot as if this was ripped straight from the games. The Cradily fight was unironically probably the most interesting thing so far, and that's an incredibly low bar. There's absolutely no sense of how strong these Champions are either, there's almost nothing that sets them apart from generic trainers this season in terms of portrayal. Such massive wasted potential for the anime as a medium to showcase how Champions fight only for them to pretty much be pure statchecking each other with oneshots and no dodging.

If you don't want to actually argue and you're just mad I'm insulting your favorite series, that's fine, but if you want to actually support said series, please explain how this garbagefest isn't a mess of 1/2shots of apparently undertrained Pokemon. In this episode alone, Aggron literally oneshots Dracovish, stands still and tanks Will O Wisp with Gengar's 10 second long dance, then faints to a not very effective Dazzling Gleam. Pikachu vs Metagross was an awful fight and something I remember people shitposting about months ago with the Alain vs Leon fight when anons claimed Ash would get his ass beat for 99% of the fight only to oneshot Metagross with a Z-Move at the end, pretty fucking spot on. Ash didn't use any strategy to try and overcome Metagross either like a big Electroweb, he just resorted to a Z-Move that we only just see for the first time allows Pikachu to independently control the 7 bolts and apparently delay them, which is a pseudo-asspull that never would have beaten Metagross with its showcased analysis ability before that.

Dracovish literally used Fisheous Rend to nullify Metagross's attack, it didn't directly take damage from it. Immediately after that exchange, Metagross was recalled and Aggron oneshot the healthy Dracovish. Try again.

First of all, Iron Tail KOd Metagross.
Secondly, Steven was on equal ground because Mega-Evolution is treated as being on the same level of hax/gimmick and thus shares a restriction with them and Daimax. Fuck off.

I never said I liked Steven's Gimmick. I don't like Gimmicks in Pokemon and all, and tbf this shit all started in gen 6. The anime is so focused on using shitty powerups instead of letting the trainers actually think their way to a win. Sorry, you pressing a button and your Pokemon magically gets much stronger isn't entertaining to watch.

Furthermore, if a mega and a z-move were equal, then why do it? If they don't change the advantage to one side or another, then they are just useless and take away actual strategy and tactics. The writers also could have just made it so gimmicks weren't allowed, but that would hurt poor Mary Sue.

Do you? Dracovish took the initiative, chomped on Metagross first, and slid back a bit when even the announcer could see that Metagross was the loser of the exchange. Doesn't justify it being taken down by a single Aggron attack after.

Ash used Paul’s training to subdue Metagross’s Psychic, Gengar’s Will o Wisp to chip Aggron, and Electroweb to stop Cradily’s Power Whips.

The thing about this battle is that I have no reason to believe Steven has any stronger pokemon in reserve. Comparatively Dracovish is Ash's least experienced pokemon and Gengar went through a jobbing streak and is far from Ash's best JN mon.

If this were Pikachu, Lucario, Dragonite vs Metagross, Cradily, Aggron I'd have reason to believe Ash would beat Steven pretty badly. Especially given how Lucario could overwhelm Raihan without Mega Evolution. Not to mention the only reason Steven's Metagross was so dangerous for Pikachu was the properties of Mega Evolution whereas Pikachu only has a shitty GMax and one godslaying move so w/o Mega Evolution Pikachu would beat Metagross 1v1 no problem.

And that isn't even accommodating for the fact that Ash is the only trainer with multiple gimmicks we know of (Aura, Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, GMax) and is handicapped by the rules into using only one. Not to mention while his JN team is very powerful the top tiers in his reserves could easily take a few spots and make it even stronger.

So basically a sub-optimal handicapped Ash could defeat an optimal full power Steven. And that's going to be the case for Cynthia most likely too.

It's really strange to me the biggest complaints I see about the battle is Ash using the Z-move, when that was the part of the battle that made the most sense, along with the fact that Metagross effectivel tried to dodge half of it and it didn't just stand there and it didn't one-hit KO it either.

Not really.
Draco Meteor is a move that's only supposed to be known by fully-evolved Dragon-types. Gible knowing it shows it's incredibly strong for a Gible.
Garchomp knowing the move isn't special or unique and you can't project Gible's evolved strength on the basis of learning a move early.

You just named them. They're great because they are actual rivals, Conways battle against Ash in the Sinnoh League was better than most battles in the entire franchise. The amount of strategy used was rare still today. And Conway was Ash's tertiary rival. They were also great because they were rivals of each other. Paul and Barry became rivals in the league, and the writers had the balls to allow a sweep of a major character. These aren't characters that have nothing really to do with Ash and show up 75% of the way through. Sorry that you don't see it.

The cameos so far have been very soulful. Seeing Paul and Reggie hanging out and supporting Ash was dope. The Legend of Thunder squad + Ritchie was unexpected kino. All the Unova rivals was dope too. Even just seeing Volkner and Flint together watching was nice. Just seeing their faces after so long is cool anon, I honestly don’t know what more I’d want.
