HMs are a bad version of a good idea. Every pokemon that lives in the water should be able to help you swim across water. Every pokemon with large enough wings should be able to fly you to another town. Every pokemon strong enough should be able to smash rocks or carry you across the lands.

"Oh but that just breaks game design if you can rock smash whenever!"

You can still bar shit like that with gym badges or licenses or whatever you want to keep players from doing it too early. No Pokemon with blades for arms should be too stupid to cut a little tree down.

HMs in their old form put too many limitations on teambuilding. If they could have the option to use your team OR a pokeride equivalent, it would be fine. Unfotunately this is Gamefreak, so I will gladly take the option that allows for more player choice over "immersion" or whatever if we can't have both.
