More importantly, they're keeping their distance because those things bite when irritated, and they've got enough bite force and a sharp enough beak to slice right through your arm if they get a hold of you - plus, they can maneuver much faster than either diver there is capable of, so if they piss it off, there's no way they'd get out of its way fast enough. The thing about nature is that you're supposed to respect it, especially when an animal is in it's natural habitat and is large enough to turn the tables on you in an instant. The idiots who don't keep their distance from critters like this are the ones who make the headlines as victims.
