Cynthia should have got the honor of losing to Leon, the actual top trainer of the Pokemon world. There's no reason for Cynthia to be ashamed of being weaker than Leon or playing second fiddle to him since the anime clearly states he is the strongest trainer while also being undefeated.

Yeah his plot armor is excellent to make sure he doesnt need to fight anyone strong before the finals.
He should have fought Ash in round 1 (#1 seed vs #8 seed), but they bent the rules for him. And he will still lose.
