i went from this game all the way to X version, the jump in quality of life was mindboggling

Like what? Pokemon's gameplay has stayed the same in mainline games. The endless cutscenes make X unplayable after playing Red.

I just started playing sun and moon and blows balls. Almost every trainer so far only has one pokemon. I miss the gyms.

I haven't played the old ones in decades. Most of my team is in the early levels 20s and it still just trainers with only one Pokémon each.

you're supposed to play USUM, not SM
but 1-2 pokemon teams for random NPC's are the norm in the whole series
the idea is that the battles wear you down over time, not that each and every one is a serious challenge
