The reason he wanted to kill Ash is because he didn't have a father, and didn't have a good father figure. His uncle was an alcoholic, while his best father figure ended up being a friend of his dad's. Named Tin, He and Tin had quite the history, the two fought in the Vietnam War together and suffered alot from the war, Tin was also Ash's schizophrenic uncle. Prior to the birth of Ash, Tin and Sonic spent a lot of time together from hiking and hunting, but it all came to an end when he began spending more time with Ash after his birth, leaving sonic out. Even though Sonic was just five years old, he promised himself in the future he would get revenge on Ash for taking his only true father figure away from him. On April 1, 1997, he set out his plan to murder Ash, but he kept being held back with hesitation after all the adventures they had. He finally decided to let loose on his plan to kill him by joining team rocket, but eventually Ash managed to get him back on the right track, as the team rocket tower was collapsing, Ash saves Sonic even after all the shit he said to him over the past several episodes of season 1. Ash admitted he never had a father either, and in a way, their friendship was almost brotherly. Sonic decided that even though he has no brother or father, he has Ash and Tin, the closest and best thing he could have from missing family parts. Sonic and Ash start shitting on Amy when they see her trying to be "sexy" to the point where Ash comments on how not even a rapist would want her, making her run off into the night crying. That was how Sonic and Ash knew they were made for each other. Sonic decided to help Ash become a Pokemon Master from here on out.
