From day 1 things like the entire Pokémon roster was publicly-available information in the lead-up to the next generation (especially back when the games would release in Japan first) and the anime itself with its monster-of-the-week format and the PokéRap ensured you knew the names of all of the creatures before you even asked your parents to buy you any games or toys.
The week Legends Arceus leaked, Japanese pre-orders quickly skyrocketted, why? Because people don't want "surprises" in games, they just want to know what they are buying.
