New Smogon usage stats just dropped. Landorus-T officially has the lowest usage rate of any #1 usage OU Pokemon.

Looks like Landorus isn't unhealthy for the meta after all.

Leaf Blade is a solid 90 base power move. I wouldn't call that exactly moderate. It also has Knock Off, which has 97.5 base power, and Sacred Sword which is also 90 base power. Its only real lackluster front is its Steel STAB, since it has to rely on Smart Strike.

I suppose not. It's just weird that such a widely available Pokemon would BTFO one of the hardest to catch Pokemon in the series. Seriously, Skarm is an absolute bitch to catch if you can even find it in the game you're playing. With a catchrate of 25, it has a lower chance of being caught than Reshiram, Zekrom, Chansey, Blissey, Rhyperior, Absol, Tyranitar, and every fully evolved starter.

The Pokemon that are struggling in UU are some absolute fucking monsters. Former OU demons like Raikou, Mamoswine, and Tentacruel, OHKO fiends like A-Marowak and Diggersby, and a menagerie of overpowered Pokemon like Togekiss, Cloyster, Tapu Bulu, and Haxorus.

Usage isn't power level, it's how "useful" a mon is. Mons with typing that win specific matchups and have narrow counterplay, like Water/Ground, Fire/Steel or Flying/Steel, will always be useful even with subpar stats.
Mons with bland or exploitable typings like Normal or Ice types need high BST or spreads to make up for their subpar typing.
Rotom-Heat and Rotom-Wash aren't always OU, but they are literally perfect in that make the best of everything

A lot of newer gens influence older gens. Gems got banned because they were really hard to predict weaker z-moves you could mindlessly jam onto your team with no restrictions. It was I think even more of an issue in BW Doubles

It’s not unhealthy for the meta, it’s just a crutch for bad players because it offers the most brain dead role compression ever. I noticed it was really the safest panic button in the lower elo side of the tier, and the people who use it love stalling out game time by switching and pivoting ad infinum. so if you’re climbing up the tiers and you hate how the thing looks, it’s gonna piss you off. But that doesn’t mean it should be banned, it actually has a lot of counterplay and I can’t remember a time where one of those things actually did significant damage to my team. Also if you don’t have a spinner you’re retarded

Going from 15 unique mons to 20 is a step up sure, but the new mons are the mandatory two legendaries, and your counters to them.

There are only 2 generations where the #1 usage OU-mon has more usage than the average #1 usage VGC mon, and that's gen 1 and 2 where Tauros and Snorlax have near 100% usage. Even in the Smeargle days, moves generally never got banned in standard play. Smogon tried their hardest to keep Baton Pass legal, passing 30 different complex bans until they just gave up. Swagger is the only move I can think of that was outright specifically banned

I said in a different thread recently that I think the way the OU council works is stupid.
Supposedly you can join if your Elo is high enough, but being good doesn't automatically make you know how to balance a game. In fact it can make you feel entitled to your strategies while dismissing any emerging counterplay as dishonest, scrubby or uncompetitive.
And that's how I think Pokémon like Landorus and Stall in general has survived this long. People who got to the top preferred this playstyle and anything that broke through it was banned while Pokémon like Landorus enjoyed a privilege of being preferred by the people in charge.

Fanfic Meta is right. I'd go as far to call it a playground meta even.

Well yes, actually, the best players DO know how to balance the game the best. The council very rarely quickbans Pokemon. Usually only in extreme cases like Genesect or Naganadel. Galarian Darmanitan is ungodly powerful and just because it kills Lando doesn't mean it's fair and balanced. It kills just about everything. There are very few Pokemon that can outspeed and KO it. People who think it shoudl be unbanned never played when it was legal.

When Leffen won GGST EVO in 2021 and the game got updated like 2 weeks after, he made a tier list so inaccurate that the entire community came together to laugh at it. On the flipside, most people who make fighting games are often painfully mediocre at them. And while I don't know the data I'd bet the same can be said for all genres.
No, being good at the game does not make you a balancing expert.

Yes, you've used that example before, but it actually shows the opposite of what you think it does. If an outsider comes in and completely destroys the competition, he has the results to back up his claims. Perhaps the people who had been playing were wrong. It happens. Smash Brothes is a great example, where some characters are unseen in America but considered overpowered in Japan, and vice versa. Pokemon is another good example. Heracross was hated by the Japanese in Gen 3 because of its monstrous offense, but in the Anglophone community, it was just good. Who is right? It depends on the meta, and outsiders can bring a healthy perspective.

As first anon put it, making the top players decide game changes can create an environment that caters to them. Plenty of games have stories of amateurs wrecking house due to an overlooked strategy by the pros. League of Legends for instance, has players of all ranks on the balance team.

That being said, I do believe the OU council is mostly fair. Bans are democratic, so anyone can make their mark if they care enough.

Leffen was not an outsider. He played DBFZ at a pro level before and played GGST since release, and these are just the games I'm aware of. He used a character that was generally regarded as top-high tier at the time too.
You are correct that outsiders can bring in perspective, but if the people on the inside get too comfortable with their preferred playstyle then your fresh new perspective may already be disregarded as scrubby by the time you can make your case.

A completely unheard of Pokemon, and he brought it into vogue. High ladder OU players have been the trend setters. Hail has been popular for the first time ever in this generation because a high ladder player brought a Hail Balance team to #4 in OU ladder with Vanilluxe as the Hail lead. This is after Crown Tundra, too, because his team also had Swampert and Cinderace.

Also, the council very rarely quickbans anything. Usually bans are put up to a vote for high ladder players. That's the fairest method, since if you have the skill to get the reqs, your input is more valid than the rabble. You have to have the knowledge, wherewithal, and execution to be one of the around 120 - 150 people who make it into the suspect test voting phase.

Nothing in OU uses Foul Play. It's hardly a weakness.
Also, Blacephalon was greatly improved by the removal of Pursuit.
Back in USUM OU, it was a decent wallbreaker but Tyranitar hard countered it because it could just switch in and automatically win with Pursuit.

Assault Vest is fine, but with Trick Room you need all the time you can get, and you'd rather have the 50% damage boost and status immunity from Guts. It allows Conk to status absorb Spore from the likes of Amoonguss, as well as Paralysis from Zapdos. You've got 5 turns to use Trick Room, which means you want to do as much damage as possible during that time.

Finite weather is fine. I just wish there was a way to extend it past 8 turns. Drizzle/Drought/Sand Stream/Snow Warning should last 5 turns, 8 with rock. Manually set weather (Rain Dance/Sunny Day/Sandstorm/Hail) should last 8 turns, infinitely with rock.

I'm not entirely sure what you think that would accomplish or what you mean by "a tier between OU and Ubers".
Ubers isn't a tier the way OU is. Things only become Ubers by being banned from OU, and usage in Ubers has no impact on OU whatsoever.
If you want to add a usage-based tier above OU, that would accomplish nothing. It would just be the same as OU is now, but with a different name.
If you want to add a banlist-based tier below Ubers, I agree because that would give some of the shittier Ubers like Zamazenta and Deoxys-Normal a place to thrive. But I assume that's not what you're talking about because this is a thread about OU and it would be weird to bring up an idea that wouldn't affect OU at all unprompted.
