Originally, it just felt weird to me that you couldn't catch Pikachu in a Pokemon game, but since then I've noticed more and more of my teams are made up of multi-generation Pokemon and I'd have missed out on gems like Golurk, Nintetails, and Dustox (early game, anyway) if every generation only let you use Pokemon from that gen until the postgame.

You're also pretending that Fly doesn't exist I didn't say tough, I said overleveled, and you're fucking kidding me if you're saying that didn't happen. There were offshoots in Unova routes where the pokemon levels jumped by 5-6 levels. So either you over level so you can go forward there, then breeze through the next gyms, or you give it up and try to remember to come back later. This was mainly an issue in the early game when level gaps are a bigger deal and BEFORE you get Fly.
