The father son relationship between Kukui and Ash is one of the best parts of the anime. It doesn't happen often anymore, but whenever it does it's the best part of an episode.

I liked it but at the same time I couldn't help but think where the fuck is Delia in all of this. I really believe the writers for sm wanted to write a story for a new protag but got stuck with ash which just led to a bunch of awkwardness

She was actually a recurring character in SM. The whole first episode features Ash on vacation with her. Then she would occasionally visit Alola to see him afterwards I can think of at least 4 episodes before the league where she returned to support Ash in some way or another.
Even got her own recurring gag where she could get Ash's notoriously independent Litten to immediately submit to her by scratching it just the right way.

It still doesn't make the family scenes any less awkward. On their own they're nice but then you remember ash already has a mom so why are kujui and Burnett treating him like some kid they've adopted. To me it feels like they wanted to have sun be the protagonist but with the back story Lillie had in the games where she was found washed up on the beach

I mean, they are pretty much the quintessential cartoon "cool uncle / aunt" combo. It's the closest FATHER figure we've seen for Ash since Oak, but that's just the anime's focus problem, not something especially weird, especially when the SM series plot was Ash being enrolled in Kukui's summer school and staying there. Would be awkward for Delia to be there all the time.

Unironically if this happened it would explain more than some likely would want to admit. How Ash is who he is, where the father seemingly vanished to once he brought shamefur dispray to his famiru in Kanto as a trainer that never made it big there, and likely a lot more if this is where Ash's traits/ect. actually came from he had at the start in Kanto.
