What happens when you beat the last gym first, but all the levels are still lower, making it easier to sweep through the rest of the game?
The level scaling is also a problem in the reverse situation.

If you can manage to defeat level 40+ (hopefully 50+) Pokemon with low level shitmons, should you not be entitled to ravage the other gyms? Level scaling is bad design, it's one of the many reasons Skyrim sucks ass.

The level curve is an issue in ways other than any kind of perceived difficulty.

Scaling is retarded.
However, this is only true if it's the most pure form of scaling, where everything scales to you, but nobody wants that.
If you're going to have an open-world game, it should be expected to be built around that, and in a turn-based RPG, levels are a big part of that.
The scaling is based on your progress, not your levels themselves, allowing the games to be open-ended but still offer a similar experience to the regular games.
