Pokemon with wide movepools will have a better selection because they can make full use of its new typing. I mean, it's neat that you can make an Ice Type Alakazam, but it will just make it a worse Alakazam..

Monotypes have never been good offensively by the sheer notion of losing a secondary STAB (though now they're better since you get improved STAB), however dualtypes are almost all worse defensively than monotypes because type combos are rarely ever an actual net gain and generally equal a net neutral or net loss. And there's more than a few Pokemon who flat out don't give a shit about their type or are made worse for having it.

Probably yes, but you'll most likely be able to trade them to collectorfags for more useful combinations.
Also, just because a pokemon lacks STAB doesn't necessarily mean it won't want that type. Shedinja would benefit from changing to Normal or Electric type even if it never uses a single move for those moves, and any bulky mono-Ice type will benefit from changing to literally any other type.

For the main story? I'm going to argue that it isn't, changing type sounds cool. But it isn't that interesting of a concept. You either change your STAB to a different type or go for "double" STAB. To put this on some sort of a cooldown just seems like bad design.

If it was just "one of your Pokemon's STABs now deal more damage" this would be the worst thing imaginable. But since most of the time, assuming Terra types are random for the most part, you are changing to a different type. You are trading your STABs for a different one. Especially in the main story you are most likely going to have unfavorable Terra types. Its either completely insane and needs to be gated. Or its sometimes a cool feature, being able to change your Grass type to a Flying type. In which case its basically useless and doesn't need to be gated. And I think it's going to be the latter.

The literal most common Tera Type a wild Pokemon will have, as stated by the fucking trailer, is its own type. So yeah, you get boosted STAB on everything unless you unluckily got lucky and pulled a different type or blindly caught a raidmon without fucking looking at it. Also that doesn't change the fact that you can still just go catch whatever fucking Tera Type you want, they're normal fucking encounters so if you get the wrong one just go get another.

That was never explicitly stated that it is their own type. It stated that it is "typically" based on its Terra type, but Pokemon can have rare terra types. In the presentation without even talking about rare terra types they showed a Drifblim Terrastalize into a Fire type, and Pikeachu into flying. Then they talk about rare types and show a Gardevoir with water. We can't even assume that Pokemon Terrastalize into their own type.

Mother fucker did you purposely skip over the fact that its based on their Terra type? Meaning their Terra type doesn't have to match their base to be their standard Terra type. They straight up show that Pikachu's basic Terra type is Flying, and Drifblim's is Fire. We can't assume a Pokemon's Terra type has any correlation to their base types.

The event Pikachu is a Pikachu that knows Fly as an event move, there's nothing to indicate you can't find a Terra battle Pikachu with Flying as its Tera type. Just means they won't know Fly when caught.

Terra Types are a 3rd type that stacks on to your existing type. The site says the "type isn't active" until you go sicko mode.

So I guarantee on the summary screen it'll say:

Drifblim GHOST/FLYING
TERA: FIRE [this will be grayed out unless you check summary while Terrastalized]

So it has to check balances against a Ghost/Flying/Fire type.

Blissey actually has the HP to compensate for its abysmal Physical Def.
Avalugg does not have the HP to compensate for its abysmal Special Def.
Though it's true you actually have offensive power with Avalugg, you wouldn't want to turn into Steel type then. Since Steel is shit offensively.

tldr Steel type Avalugg won't be good Ferro still better

I'm inclined to agree, honestly. Unless the new/improved STAB values are literally doubling your damage, this is a pretty weak gimmick for regular play, where you one-shot damn near everything anyway. All the "fun" use cases seem to be in sweaty competitive battles where you can bait counters to sweepers or change a wall's typing to something your opponent doesn't have a good counter for.

Isn't that just...how STAB works? Terastal turns a Pokemon into a solid single-type, so it has the weaknesses and resistances of that type and any move it has of that type will get a STAB boost. Am I missing something?
