Gen 1-2 The original Gameboy era (Gold and Silver ran on OG Gameboy and Nintendo sees GBC as a GB revision anyway). This was the classic Pokemon.
Gen 3 The odd transition from GB to DS. The GBA to me is a weird middle point and you sort of see it in the games for example with it not having physical and special split for example and no internet battles. However it had modern Pokemon look, the intruduction of Natures, EV's and IV's and high focus on end of the world legendaries over the down to earth legendaries optional games of Gen 1 and 2 and the first time an old Pokemon game got remade for new gen.
Gen 4-5 the DS era. If Gen 3 wasn't the start of Modern Pokemon. then this was certainly when it did start Legendaries focal point of the stories, physical/special split, internet connection for battles and trades etc.
Gen 6-7 the 3DS era. This is the start of the Nu-Pokemon. Transition to 3d which defines to this day modern Pokemon looks and gimmicks came here. Also the intruduction of different forms of old Pokemon since they lack originality to make enough good new Pokemon.
Gen 8+ the Switch era. This is the start of the Nu-Pokemon+. Trying to revamp Pokemon more and more. Trying to also get away from classic Pokemon battle system but at the same time fearing to get rid of it. Pokemon for first time coming out of the low powered handheld scene and it's limitations become more obvious. The remakes of this gen are being received worse. An even weirder Nu-Style of characters. More gimmicks as well and maybe even becoming very slightly woke here as well.
