So how exactly does this shit work? Does it add a type to a Pokemon, replace its primary type, or does the Pokemon become monotype?

Replaces all types. Makes you mono.
If it replaced an existing type, yoy get 2x stab instead of 1.5

That's disappointing because I'd love to pull some shenanigans with Shedinja. I guess an Electric Tera type with an Air Balloon can do the trick.
