Hello people of reddit? Sword and shield wasn't a failure right? Its just like gen 5, where we only pretended to hate it, but everyone liked it.

I mean I played Sword not that long ago for the first time and it was basically the definition of "another pokemon game". Not anything special but definitely not deserving of the insane amount of hatred it got either. I was expecting it to be a disaster.

The games are all ultimately "fine" because the core of the series is solid.

But most people are hoping for more than fine. Obnoxious one-off gimmicks, terrible graphics, ugly 3DS-era models, paring down online functionality, no postgame, ignoring fan favourite features, etc. All these have been problems for years, and to see them replicated or worsened as the series goes on is just deeply disappointing.

But of course it's "fine." It's the same as every other Pokemon game. People are just hoping for a bit more polish or a bit of progress

Have you ever heard of planned (or programmed) obsolecence? It's a very interesting topic that. applied to this franchise, is at the core of why each gen has to get rid of something they did before, just so they can create the illusion of constant change, and even the need in some their consumer to buy older products if they want to access certain features.

If you're an easy to please person, then Pokemon is a good game.
Modern pokemon is about making 7/10 games or the lowest possible grade to pass games, they don't need effort anymore to make a 10/10 or a 9/10 game. They're going to pass anyway, that's what matters to TPC.

This isn't beneficial to them since they make no money off used game sales.
Yes, there were VC releases of gens 1 and 2, but absolutely nobody is going back to those because of the features, save for catchable Celebi in VC Crystal.

I bought the game at half price and after finishing it, I felt that it was not worth even that.
While I have issues with previous (recent) games too, I never felt like that, and this was despite paying full price at that.
The main reason to that is probably in how I play the games, and how the mandatory EXP Share completely ruins any semblance of difficulty I could've mustered by not using it.

A lot of the games issues were fixed with the DLC, which is a bad thing cause it should've been good in the base game, but good that they were fixed at all. Stuff like the pokemon exclusion, and the graphics (only got slightly better in the dlc locations)
The most glaring thing not fixed was the in game story. It was hot garbage. Team Yell DOES suck and then you're being actively excluded from anything plot related happening as you go through the game only for it all the happen suddenly at the end, and it be very tedious and unsatisfying. Not to mention how shitty eternatus was. USUM's story and Necrozma stuff was much harder and more interesting.
