As a result, I would say take 2 accessible versions within the same generation and play them with a friend. Battle after every Gym, trade locally over if you are playing the newer games even trade strangers, do multi battle challenges if they are available in the games you are playing, and when you beat the Elite Four in the game, challenge your friend to interesting battles like 1v1s with the same species or monotype teams.

I have beat the Emerald Battle Frontier, completed the Nat Dex, and have trained over 200 Pokemon by hand alone and I had never had as much fun just battling people.
