Sorry for the rough photoshop, but just having the crown and gem instead of the entire fountain/whatever looks so much better in my opinion

Harder to merchandise.
I agree the crown alone looks better, but I don't think the hats look bad per se, so I don't really care.

How about a middle ground? Combined the original image with OP's and reduced the size of the fountain by half.

And without the balloons like OP's. At this level, it could be hard to tell which crown it is during gameplay which is why I think they went with the gaudy ornaments.
