NPCs will have a visible red line of sight in a cone in front with a small ring around their body that also acts as a detection hitbox

Their line of sight has some good distance, but their detection radius is the same as an aggressive Pokemon instead of a skittish one, so avoiding them's easy as long as they don't see you.
