I've been playing since Gen 1 and even better been old enough to be outside the catch net Nintendo pitched it at in Gen 1. games have gotten better, when looking at them from the perspective of a normie or a kid (the chief audiences). The problem is no cunt here is self-aware enough to understand they're obsessive, autistic manchildren, self-centred and seething *their* kiddy game series isn't growing up for them, isn't listening to them or in fact, isn't bothering with them as a demographic in the slightest. So they bitch and cry and cope they got left behind.
And no, the games weren't some paragon of JRPG design and the thing regressed after Tajiri stepped back, they were middling experiences erring on the side of young players (baby's first JRPG, before they grow up and start playing DQ or something age-appropriate), bolstered by the fact it kickstarted a phenomenon with the toys, cards, tv show and fuck knows what else launched as one bombshell in the west after authentically growing in stature in Japan.
