Real answer:
Because of Gens 4-8 (3-8 maybe even?) being so uninnovative forced stagnation which made the new games somehow not substantially better than older games
As such, Pokemon fans debate about "which gen is the best" more than any other franchise.
And so they consider even gen on the same standard, which is retarded... for older gens.
Because Gen 8 just completely fails to even remotely fit the standard somehow
