It’s the latent potential of your Pokémon being brought out and giving them basically a temporary “super form”. It goes beyond just being a gimmick, it’s something that’s directly caused by your relationship with your Pokémon, and because of those lore reasons it really connected with a lot of people. You can accomplish a whole lot when you can convince people that this thing is the direct result of something that you accomplished.
That’s the problem with Z-Moves, Dynamax, and Terastalizing. They actually feel like gimmicks instead of being written in a way that makes you feel connected with the game. You can kind of argue Z-Moves sort of have that but it’s definitely not as strong as Megas. And Gigantamax is random, there’s zero explanation of why it happens as opposed to regular Dynamax. It was a blatant example of GameFreak trying to chase the success of Megas but not putting all the work in to make it make sense.
I don’t hate the gimmick though. I feel like the shenanigans you can pull with it will be very interesting and it’ll definitely give an opportunity to Pokémon who otherwise suck donkey balls because of their own typings.
