Grand oak is an oak from a timeline where all pokemon went completely extinct he wants you to catch them and store them in home so he can clone them and restore his world but sadly he is also the last human so this new world will be filled with only pokemon

That's what bothers me too; you literally never see Grand Oak again after that little intro sequence. At least Brigette was a fun callback to the gamecube and was there to help you navigate the main menu, they should have just kept the tradition and had her be the face of Home as well.
